What are BarkaronsⓇ?
Barkarons® are on every dog’s wish list! These unique, super healthy, decadent, eco-friendly, French macarons for dogs are handcrafted from pristine, wholesome, all-natural, and beyond organic ingredients, promoting immune health, skin & joint health, skin & coat health, and digestive wellbeing. Packaged in elegant, handcrafted, eco-friendly gift boxes (no plastic), each with 16 pieces. Sustainably sourced, fairly traded, 1% to animal rescue and 1% to the planet!
How does Chews Happiness support sustainability?
Our tagline is: “for you, your pet, and the planet.” Chews Happiness® is a social enterprise and business bringing wholesome, eco-friendly, sustainably sourced, beyond organic, handcrafted creations to America’s dogs, supporting indigenous herders and small farmers in developing countries. We have earned a top 20 ranking for 2020-2021 by the Pet Sustainability Coalition, offset 100% of the carbon we generate, are a ZERO carbon business, and have a number of projects to support indigenous lifestyles.
What key ingredients are in your dog treats?
We use pristine, all-natural, beyond organic, functional food ingredients. These include turmeric, ginger, camel cheese, yak cheese, purple carrots, organic chicken, organic berries and pomegranates, and gelatin. Our gelatin is packed with collagen amino acids and comes from grass-fed cattle pasture-raised on farms that do not use steroids, antibiotics or hormones and adhere to animal welfare guidelines. These collagen amino acids promote joint health and skin and coat health.
Our lactose-free Gobi Desert Camel Cheese comes from family-nurtured camels and is a rare delicacy for dogs. It has unique health properties including helping support digestive health and helping manage canine diabetes. This yummy cheese is also packed with healthy fats, antioxidants, and potent immune boosters such as immunoglobulins and lactoferrin. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals –including vitamins C and B1, calcium, iron, and potassium.
What inspired you to build this business?
As a Corporate Refugee who spent over two decades in Corporate America, I wanted to start a business and social enterprise that was going to do a bit of good for people and the planet. When my wife, Meeta, and I got our precious dog, Bouncer, we realized that BIG Pet Companies offer extremely limited healthy, eco-friendly products. So, Chews Happiness was born!
How did you come up with your company’s name “Chews Happiness”?
Our products are handcrafted in Bhutan, a tiny country high up in the Himalayas. As the only carbon-negative country on the planet, we were impressed with how they were trying to develop in a holistic manner. Bhutan developed the concept of focusing on Gross National Happiness (GNH) just as much, if not more so, than Gross Domestic Product (GDP). As our enterprise is all about bringing Happiness to you, your pet, and the planet, we decided to work with the Happiness theme and remind people that they and their pets can indeed choose Happiness!
How has your product line developed over time?
We started with our Happiness Hugs handcrafted doggie sweaters. We then came out with our Barkarons super healthy, Decadent Doggie Desserts®. We are planning to commercialize our all-natural, super long-lasting, and safe amazing dog chews early next year.
What are you looking forward to most as a new Firefly Handmade artisan?
We would like to get the word out about our tiny, special company. If we can affect how a few people start to think about how sustainable their lifestyles are, we have succeeded in our mission.
